WHAT ENTREPRENUERS NEVER TELL YOU OF THE HORENDOUS SIDE OF IT
So I am sure you have seen the stories on how so and so quit school and then started entrepreneurship and they suddenly became that guy!!!! It Makes you want to send in your resignation that you may start your business right away. You have probably always wanted to get an early retirement at 30, telling your manage "infarct you don't fire me, I quit".
Someone told you selling Quail eggs is easy money, you can become a millionaire. It looks so glamourous and so cool. Especially when you write on your business card, director of....... But is it as cool as it is mind boggling or even torturous???
Truth is the finished product is the glamourous one, you can even dress up, the process on the hand is another thing all together. You have never gotten a headache in your life, starting a business will cause you one. You just feel over here like your heart beats faster, your head finally knows what it means to have a jog, your heart runs really fast, you are on panic mode for a moment with horror dreams of backfiring possibilties, okay maybe not a moment, for a whiiiiiile. There is always a sigh of relief once that is done,but it does teach you how to come up with solutions self, it does teach you how to be boss, but not before horror. Here are the key horror of the experiences
You must be a sales person!!!!
I don't know that many people who enjoy sales as a practise, I always ask people if it is a true feeling that they enjoy sales or are they pretending. Infarct even in interviews of other jobs, no one tells you, you are going to do sales, you just find yourself trapped in short garments at a round about having to do it . Sigh!!! the days of our youth.
I personally hate it, to mean I don't enjoy it at all. You call guys in the name of marketing your product/service and sometimes they make you feel, that they think you are a cone woman/man, somehow!!!! With questions like "Who gave you my number?" And a girl be like "You gave me your card?!"
Some make you feel guilty for not having called them for a while, and that is when you have to master the art of small talk and laughing for no reason Whatsoever! Everything is funny, no laughter, no money. The receiver on the other end is trying HARD to sound as bored as possible, you can feel it that they are rolling the eyes. If you are not lucky the will advice "Can you get straight to the point". OUCH, "that's my petite Ego injured right there" In your attempt to summarize you stumble upon your words, Then he says "You know what why don't you send it on email" He raps his email really fast, you don't get it at all, you only hear @yahoo.com (what can you do with that), and your too afraid to tell him "please sir repeat your email" so you be like "I will send you" . In your head you are like, "good riddance to that phone call", because you are all sweating, your high blood pressure is high, you probably need to be rushed to hospital URGENTLY, in your mind you be like, "what the HELL was that?!"
Then oi, you meet the one who tells you right away, "what do you want". Yo, Face palm, hides under chair and don't get out.
Bottom line, calls make you nervous. You would rather even meet people in person, and hope that your charm can win or trick them, perhaps.
That awkward moment when you are asked where your offices are
So you have done an amazing job, you have handed over your self made cards, and then the Question is asked "where are your offices" . Oi, someone shoot me now! Where are my what? Who? Where? How? Random noises in your head, swinging left right and centre. You are about to say, my office is at my house. But you just all over sudden get wisdom. like for real, you realize, ala, si my house has an adress. so you just state it real fast, man! YOU CAN NEVER SAY YOUR OFFICE IS AT YOUR HOUSE. Well unless it's my friend where by I say, that I am the office, when you see me, you have seen the office. But for real thats where your office is, only guests don't come.
I think the worst part was when this lady who was interested in interning for my organization asked me if she could come to my offices. Ha ha ha, too funny. So I was about to tell her that my offices were at Presige Plaza roof top, she should come and meet me there. Lol, the I just said it calmly, though it felt as though I was screaming on email. we DONT have an office!!!! we shall have a walk as we talk about your internship, and we encourage interns to have their own laptops , and we shall be meeting ONLY when need arises. I am sure we horrify them sometimes, however, I was thrilled that some one wants to learn from my organization. Small joys :). However I DO NEED THINE OFFICE SOON!!!!
You can easily be mistaken for being idle
Okay Very closely to having no office, is the obvious fact that you are near thine Chambers. Really, we are digital generation, our laptops are our world and our offices. BUT the rest of the world is 8.00- 5.00, our world as entrepreneur is, you are the work, like work is you 24/7, because you will wake up in the middle of the night and voila, have to work. It sometimes tempting to call guys at 4.00 in the AM, you assume it is day time and everyone is probably having breakfast early.
However to the world it may look like you are just chilled out, dreaming of coast in the house when people are working,cooking different meals, gallivanting through estates and visiting each other. ha ha ha, well you may be dished out with variety of job opportunities, you should consider applying. Genuine concern for "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE!!!" Umepose Kimodel when people are on the race. Lol, life is really funny, we find it easier to misinterpret each other, you understand it alot more when you are on the grind, yourself. LOL, a friend of mine told me he does feel insulted when offered random opportunities . This has been my mantra as long as we are not borrowing each others' money, we are cool! No pressure to other people's.
You are actually Idle
Well unless you do something about it, you have all the time in the world,, you sometimes do not know what to do with it?? I think that is the time you will see one of us randomly walking up and down. Could it be that we are genuinely Idle, and the sales part that we must do to get a job DOES NOT look like the enjoyable part. Well, i don't know how other entrepreneurs do it, but one can actually SIT DOWN on a chair and watch a movie during work hours. Oi, I will just feel like I have wasted so much time doing nothing, and even feel like ulcers are beginning to emerge. But one problem I have is FACEBOOK, I actually have to stop myself from posting odd jokes on social media. Really be interpreted to be idle is not anything you would want. It is the only reason my chat is never on, I just don't believe in chatting during my office hours.
But you see we are all different, some people got in to entrepreneurship to have more ME TIME. I just never seen to get that kind of time. But also I think if I plan my time well, it shouldn't be as hazardous.
How on earth do people manage their money!?
Okay, first of all, I am communication graduate, the you are telling me to balance sheet! I haven't written a word on the accounts book I bought begining of January.
This is what happens, you may say get a Cheque written 59,000. Okay? okay! So you are happy, you be like, Oh my God, how cool is this. The you realize you have probably spend 58,000 to produce all these, like you have paid stuff, you have bought products, you have marketed, you have spend so much money preparing. So your profit is not 59,000. Your profit is Ksh (59,000 - 58,000= 1000) . As in you have sweated and run up and down for Ksh 1000. Hwaaaaaaat. You just feel over here wasted. For like "Bad things happen to good people also" You have undercharged, you should really feel silly about it, because you are so close to negative it is painful.
You don't even know how to balance accounts , you sometimes feel like you need to go on a holiday with ALL your money, wasting it on digestibles. Sigh!!! the question of money, learning budgeting will be of neccessity, we can't work for money to solely buy juice.
You take criticism very personally
You see unlike someone saying how they hate their job is a casual statement in every day world,but when someone says they hate their job which is your business you hear it as though they have said they HATE YOU!!! It is really really personal. It is like your baby, someone telling you that the baby you have haboured in thines stomach for 9 months is NOT CUTE!!!!!. You want them to say it again, so that you may blast them.
Its just that it is so personal, you have taken money sijui you have earned from where and missed a whole month of income because you are doing business, you have invested your life in it.
It is personal because we, as in I passed one of life chances to shop and eat heavy for this, and you are telling me it is BORING!!!!!!. It is highly offensive, (watu wako na madharau sana). Infarct Very insulting, we wish you would say you love Monday, how you look forward to every working experience and that you just enjoy self.
You are genuinely broke
You are a director, but you are broke one, coz you only earn after you have paid everyone you look at your pocket, and you be like Where did the money go!!! So you literally live on hope, can hope pay bills? but I guess after the first nearing loss, you become the wiser, I guess, you cut down on some expenditure, squeeze a budget, like honestly if you pay stuff 90% of the money only to end up with nada? This is not the right time we can say things like I LOVE WHAT i A DOING WITH MY LIFE, I DON'T CARE ABOUT MONEY. Let me just tell you how that statement can go hung by it self.
You cant give up even if you wanted to
You can't give up even if it was the only choice left. In life there are either wins or wins. Because in my world, it has to work, it really has. For the entrepreneurs you have engaged not only your livelihood, but others as well. If it doesn't work, you are not only the one ending up jobless, you are causing another as well.
You have refused some jobs so that you can do this, hell yeah, it has to work coz I can't go back to those guys and tell them, boss, hook me up with a job my guy. So it has to work. I believe some of them eyes are wide open watching to see what will come out of my declining to work in some places.
So when everyone leaves, you are and must be the last employee standing. People come in and go and you are still here. You are that guy who will be saying, na do mabizna, ni kuhustle, or having the prestigious title of young entrepreneur. You are still that guy, because it is your life, it is your baby. You can't watch it go down and say things like "nilijua haitamake it"
Its not bad at all though, when you touch your money, that is yours, when you spend your money that is not given but self earned. It reminds you why you chose this uncertain path of creating your own foot paths, that your livelihood solely depends on you. You know it is not easy, but it is worth it!!!!!!!!!!
