THE JOURNEY OF 1000 MILES
When someone invites you to the mountain, say Mt. Longonot, and gives you all inspirational words, you are excited and can’t wait to get to the mountain. In fact, you visualize the thrill of the mountain when you are on it, it almost gives you the same excitement as when you are on the beach. But, when you get to the mountain, the thrill is only when you see it. You think, Lawd, this is priceless until you start to climb, then you pay the price for getting to the top of it. You realize that climbing a mountain is not always as it seems. You start calling Mary and Joseph or even the prophet Jeremiah because you begin to ask yourself, why would I leave home early in the morning to come here to suffer.
Being an entrepreneur is the most humbling journey, it is indeed such as climbing a mountain. When you leave the comfort of your paycheck and the ability to shop for colorful clothes at vivo, to the craziness of having to explain to everyone that you don’t hate your bosses, or you are not lazy and hate to work, but you have the vision to change the world, he hehe. Because you listened to the words of rich dad poor dad, and are probably living below the poverty line almost, away from your folks money. You wonder where is the wealth Kiyosaki was talking about even? Your fears could be, what if you find yourself interning at 40 because a business has failed or didn’t really thrive, it can scare the hell out of you waking up at midnight panting for sure. But, it makes you interact with failure differently and even fear, you just face it, every time you have to mumble to explain, what you do exactly, you gain a little more courage.
One day you wake up, and indeed you have climbed the mountain. Someone knows what you are, knows the name of your business, and is beginning to understand when you try to explain what you do exactly that is not posing in the house like a model and eating. Success is inevitable if you stay long enough if you are resilient, consistent, and true to the course, and when you allow yourself to keep learning one day you earn it. Out of the blue, many call you for opportunities that make all the noise-making worth it.
One day, after all the sweat and a few nose-blowing moments you are part of 500 Tribesmen from just you. How can you not be proud, after looking back and seeing all that has been possible with faith, it may seem little, but when you look back, you see truly the journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step, which makes it all worth it. Perhaps you would never have done it any other way.
From my days of going downtown to the river road looking for kitchenware to struggling to open my mouth to sell shorts to a friend, to calling and trying to develop an accent so as to sound more sophisticated, to now owning my own, take it or leave it.
Today, I find myself part of the Dream and beginning to live the dream.
